Volunteer Night

What to Expect: Various projects are always taking place at CRBH, and a list will always be posted prior to Volunteer Night. We have lots of donated bikes that still need to be assessed and cleaned, as well as a large inventory of bike parts and accessories that need sorting. Speaking of bike parts, our bike scrap and salvage pile is generally needing attention so feel free to drop by and disassemble a few.

Scrap Night at CRBH
Join us for Scrap Night!
Taking apart bikes is a great way to learn the basics of how the bike works, how to use special tools, and get your hands dirty while having some fun! Our commitment to sustainability starts with keeping bikes out of the landfill by upcycling road-worth bikes, and recycling bikes and bike parts that are no longer needed. This will be a recurring Tuesday night event, as we continue to work through our large inventory of bikes.
Anyone interested in joining is more than welcome to assist us in dismantling bikes that we have deemed unfit for repair, unsafe to ride, or poor quality or condition. We will be salvaging any reusable parts, and recycling the rest with some help from our friends @kjhaulawayjunkremoval.
If you’ve thought about volunteering, but weren’t sure how to get involved, this is a great way to get plugged into the CRBH shop and meet members of our team.

We have lots of donated bikes that still need to be assessed and cleaned, as well as a large inventory of bike parts and accessories that need sorting. Speaking of bike parts, our bike scrap and salvage pile is always needing attention so feel free to drop by and disassemble a few.
Who can volunteer?: Anyone who has signed a Volunteer Waiver and/or attended one of our volunteer orientations. If you haven’t been able to make our monthly orientation, but want to lend a hand, drop by and we’ll get you plugged in.
Why volunteer?: As a volunteer-run non-profit, we depend on your time and talents to keep things rolling. Your efforts directly the organization’s vision and mission, and support many of our current and upcoming community initiatives. Volunteering is a rewarding way to spend your evening, gain new skills, and connect with others.

Cranksgiving
Join the Cedar Rapids cycling community for Goldfinch Cyclery’s 8th Annual Cranksgiving! Chain Reaction is excited to be one of this year’s ride stops, and our receipt is worth 3x the raffle tickets!
In case you’re not familiar:
Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels; part bike ride, part food drive, and part scavenger hunt. It's been held annually in New York City since 1999. Every year, throughout the country, Cranksgiving events help provide thousands of needy families with a wealth of food during the week of Thanksgiving. For the 8TH YEAR in a row, we're including Cedar Rapids in this national movement!
Pump up your tires, grab your helmet, lights, lock, your navigational skills, and $20-$40* to purchase food (*depending on how many grocery stops you make). You'll be provided a manifest with a list of food items to buy from specific grocery stores around town, and time before the official start to strategize your route. This is not a race friends! The idea is to ride at your own pace, and plan your route to visit each grocery stop, or 'checkpoint', to purchase the specific food items on our list. Once you've acquired all the food donations you can, the next stop is to deliver the goods to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and make it back down to the NewBo neighborhood for our After Party.
The Loaves & Fishes is a food pantry located in Tanager Place at 1030 5th Ave. SE Suite 1700. It is a joint ministry of Westminster Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church. Their guiding principles are to treat everyone with respect and offer as much choice and dignity as possible. Every Tuesday from 2:30 to 5 p.m between 100-200 people come to the pantry for a box of food organized and distributed by volunteers. In turn, that food reaches about 1,500 individuals each month.
Visit the Loaves & Fishes website (https://www.crwpc.org/loaves-and-fishes) for more information about Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and how you can continue to contribute to this invaluable resource.
